Information from the Veterans Choice Program Website:

The Veterans Choice Program is one of the many programs through which a Veteran can receive care from a  provider, paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If  a Veteran needs an appointment for a specific type of care, and the  VA cannot provide the care in a timely manner or the nearest VA medical facility is too far away or too difficult to get to, then a Veteran may be eligible for care through the Veterans Choice Program.

To use the Veterans Choice Program, Veterans must receive prior authorization from VA to receive care from a provider that is part of VA’s VCP network of community providers. The authorization is based on specific eligibility requirements and discussions with the Veteran’s VA provider. VA must authorize care that is needed beyond the scope of the first authorization.

Information from the CalVCB website:

The California Victim Compensation Board is a state program dedicated to providing reimbursement for many crime-related expenses to eligible victims who suffer physical injury or the threat of physical injury as a direct result of a violent crime. CalVCB funding comes from restitution paid by criminal offenders through fines, orders, penalty assessments and federal funds. All other methods of insurance must be used before CalVCB can be considered.

There are many benefits to choosing to pay out of pocket instead of using insurance. For example: more freedom over your care, and more privacy over your confidential information. Also, insurance companies do not pay for those who do not have a covered, diagnosable mental health condition. Therefore as an example, most insurance companies will not pay for relationship or marital therapy. If  you have out of network benefits, you may choose to request a paid services invoice from your therapist to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement up to the limit on your plan.
